CNIB Library Braille Writing Contest

Funded by the Canadian Braille Literacy Foundation, this annual contest encourages and rewards creativity and braille accuracy by kids in grades 1-12, who compete for prizes for their original stories and poems. This competition is open to primary and secondary students who are eligible for CNIB service.

Administered by CNIB, the Canadian Braille Literacy Foundation provides funding for projects and programs that promote braille literacy and make braille publications and instruction more accessible to people who are blind or living with vision loss.
The Edie Mourre Transcriber’s Scholarship

The Canadian Braille Authority has established a scholarship in memory of Edie Mourre, a dedicated braille transcriber and strong advocate for access to braille.
Braille200 Special International Essay Competition
This international essay competition commemorates the bicentennial of the birth of Louis Braille and is made possible with funding from the E. Ben and Mary Hochhausen Technology Award.
“Technology a Bridge to Braille Literacy - How evolving technologies will impact or alter braille learning and teaching in 2020 and beyond”
Submissions in English of 3000–5000 words will be accepted by email on or before April 30, 2009. The essay must be an original work. Braille200 reserves the right to publish or distribute the winning entries. Email submissions to: shampa.bose@cnib.ca
Three awards in the amount of $3,000 each will be announced in June 2009. Entries will be adjudicated by an independent panel and all decisions will be final.
Eligibility:
Applications are accepted from any country in the world. Trustees will consider:
- Students enrolled in a recognized College, University or equivalent program;
- Researchers from industry, academia or applied science

Gretzky Braille200 Scholarship Award
To commemorate the bicentennial of the birth of Louis Braille, Gretzky Braille200 Scholarship Award announces an essay competition of 1,000 words entitled "A Braille Odyssey - 2009 and Beyond".
Eligibility:
Candidates must be:
- Blind or living with vision loss;
- A secondary school graduate entering their first year of post-secondary education;
- A Canadian citizen or have held landed immigrant status for one year prior to the date of application.
- The deadline for submission is May 31, 2009. This ‘one time’ award is in the amount of $5,000 to be given to a successful recipient who will be invited to present the essay at the 2009-CNIB Braille Conference in Toronto on October 29, 2009.
